The Problem

Most nomads track their days on a spreadsheet, in their head, or by trusting their phone's location history. None of that holds up when the IRS demands proof.

An audit doesn't just question your math. It questions whether you were actually where you said you were, on the days you claimed.

Why Road to Exemption

Finally, proof that holds up.

Build an audit-ready record, one trip at a time

GPS verification, trip itineraries, and uploaded documents work together — layered evidence the IRS expects, not the single source a spreadsheet provides.

Watch your FEIE progress build, day by day

Count up to your 330 qualifying days — alongside Schengen 90/180, tourist visa allowances, and tax residency thresholds. One view for every day-count that matters when you travel.

Your records survive what your phone doesn't

Seven-year encrypted cloud backup means your travel records outlast a lost device, a new phone, or a five-year gap between filing and audit.

Features

Everything the IRS could ask for. Nothing you have to think about.

Trip manager with flight & stay details

Log destinations, dates, confirmation numbers, and accommodations as you book — not scrambling at tax time.

Document vault

Add photos of passport stamps and paper tickets, upload boarding passes and receipts. Digital and analog proof, in one place.

Background GPS verification

Low-battery location capture runs quietly while you travel. Hard proof that corroborates your declared itinerary.

All your counters in one view

FEIE qualifying days, Schengen 90/180, per-country tourist visa allowances, and tax residency thresholds — tracked together, alerted before you hit a limit.

Conservative conflict resolution

When the same day could count two ways, RTE attributes it to the stricter side — by default. Because tax authorities do.

Audit package export

One tap generates a complete PDF — location history, supporting documents, and a summary your CPA or the IRS can actually use.

How It Works

Configure once. Capture as you go.

STEP 01

Add your trips as you book them.

A few minutes per trip and you're good to go. Literally.

STEP 02

Upload documents as you create them.

Boarding passes, stamps, receipts — anything that proves you were there.

STEP 03

GPS runs in the background.

Quietly verifying your location, every day, without draining your battery.

When the time comes, export your records and send them to the appropriate party — your CPA for filing, the IRS for an audit. The work is already done.

Pricing

About 30 cents a day. To protect thousands in tax savings.

The FEIE shelters six figures of foreign income from US tax — if your records hold up. Expat accountants charge hundreds of dollars a year to file the return. RTE keeps the records that make the return defensible.

Privacy & Trust

Built to absorb the worst-case scenario.

An audit doesn't just consume a random Saturday afternoon. It pulls you into weeks of document requests and written responses, and the tax bill at the end can wipe out years of savings if your records don't survive scrutiny. Road to Exemption is what makes that scenario survivable — because your records are ready to deploy where you need them.

And your records remain yours. We don't sell or share your location data. Ever. Subscriptions are our business model — not your information. Your audit trail exists to protect you, not to be monetized by us.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

How does the IRS actually verify FEIE claims?
FEIE returns get specific scrutiny. The IRS has a dedicated audit questionnaire for Form 2555, and electronic filing systems flag travel-date inconsistencies automatically. The Physical Presence Test is a factual claim that requires documentation when questioned. "Weak travel records" is one of the most common reasons otherwise-valid FEIE claims are disallowed in audit — and reconstructing a record after the fact is very difficult.
Is GPS alone enough proof?
In most cases, no. GPS coordinates establish a pattern but aren't self-explanatory to an auditor. Road to Exemption layers GPS with your declared itinerary and uploaded documents — the combination is what creates a credible record.
What does the audit package actually include?
A PDF with your complete location history, day counts, trip details, and any documents you've uploaded — formatted for review by a CPA or IRS examiner.
What if I don't travel full-time?
The physical presence test requires 330 days outside the US in a 365-day period — you don't need to be a full-time nomad. Road to Exemption tracks your exact count so you know where you stand.
Is my data secure?
All data is encrypted at rest and in transit on Firebase. Your travel history stays private — never sold, never shared, never used to advertise to you. Subscriptions fund this app, not your data.
